GEM Mechanical’s support of MAGIC Camp 2017

Posted on Jul 5, 2017

This year I had the opportunity to plan and participate in the National Association of Women in Construction – Philadelphia’s MAGIC (Mentoring A Girl In Construction) Camp.  MAGIC is a six day “free” camp offered to 7th – 12th grade girls throughout the region.  This year the girls visited the Sprinkler Fitters, Carpenters, Steamfitters, Cement & Plasterers, and Finishing Trades local union training centers to learn about their respective work.  The also did a tour of the active job site at the iconic LOVE park. It was an enjoyable experience to witness the girls plastering walls, making tool boxes, measuring water pressure, plastering and painting walls, cutting glass, and gluing pipe. Mary...

Wissahickon School Board awards new boiler installation project to GEM Mechanical Services

Posted on Oct 15, 2014

LOWER GWYNEDD>> Ever since the Wissahickon School Board decided against the construction of a new high school earlier this summer, the district has begun spending a lot of money to address a number of issues arising at the school. That trend continued during a special meeting of the board Monday night, where a new boiler installation project at the high school was awarded to GEM Mechanical Services Inc. at a base bid amount of $179,000. Business Administrator Wade Coleman called the winning bid “competitive” after it beat out 10 other hopeful contractors. The move though reflects a commitment by the district to finally address some of the concerns made from the board and the community during the June 9 meeting about the aging building. “Two-and-a-half years ago I toured the high school when I was first elected as a director on the board,” said board member Barbara Ullery at the time, adding she had toured the school again recently to get a fresh perspective. “When it rains, the (science) hallway is below grade and needs to be pumped … The rest rooms are bad, not from lack of cleaning but from wear and look like a slum. There are classrooms with no windows that are like a cave or...

iPads Ordered for Project Managers

Posted on Nov 6, 2013

All GEM Project Managers, Field Superintendent, and Foreman carry the latest version of Apple’s mini iPads while in the field to stay in touch with GEM’s management, office staff, customers, engineers, and owners. These devices are a convenient way to stay connected with each other during the day while construction initiatives are underway.  The devices are handy for taking job photographs, reviewing project schedules, submitting daily reports, and for reviewing project plans, and specifications.  “This tool has allowed our team to stay connected with each other and share daily activities.  We decided to purchase the devices to help streamline our efforts while allowing the office personnel to stay in touch and provide up to date materials to the field workers.  It has been a great investment.”, stated Mary Gaffney....
